CYCLING
Called the ‘Hautes’ or High Pyrénées, these mountains and valleys, peaks and rivers are wonderfully dramatic and always attract the Tour de France. The village is situated between two famous Cols of the Tour, the Col de Tourmalet and the Col d’Aubisque.

Whether you prefer road cycling or mountain biking, you won’t be disappointed, there is plenty of ground to cover. For an idea of VTT trails and road routes in the area, or should you need to hire your bike rather than bring one with you, take a look at Luz Ardiden Vélos owned and run by Mathew and Nicky, they have the latest bikes, helpful advice and they deliver.

Saint-Savin is widely considered to be one of the prettiest villages in the Pyrénées. Situated at a panoramic 553 metres above sea level, the village has commanding views north, east and south across the valley de Gave — one of the many rivers that comes from the mountains and flows all the way to the Atlantic Ocean, Bayonne and Biarritz.

SKIING
To continue the mountain theme, we have in this valley alone six ski stations, all of which have piste and off piste runs.

Hautacam : 20 minutes from the hotel. Ideal for the family with 14 runs and a ski area of 26km.

Cauterets : 20 minutes from the hotel. This fashionable resort is very popular. Book in the centre of the town for ski lifts to the station. There are 21 runs and a ski area of 36km.

Barèges and La Mongie : 35 minutes from the hotel. Considered to be the best in the Pyrénées, ski in between two resorts. 71 runs with a ski area of 113km.

Luz-Ardiden : 35 minutes from the hotel. Popular with panoramic views, having 26 runs and a ski area of 60km.

Gavarnie : 40 minutes from the hotel. World heritage listed by UNESCO, close to the Spanish border, superb snow and pistes for everyone – very tranquil. There are 33 runs with a ski area of 52km.

WALKING
If you are a walker or bird watcher, then of course the mountains and lakes are for you, there are some of the finest walks in Europe right on our doorstep as are some magnificent birds of prey. We highly recommend the ‘Rother Walking Guide Pyrenees 2’ for this spectacular region.

For the adventurous and energetic, there are plenty of other activities, including, kayaking, white water rafting, canyoning, rock climbing and paragliding to name but a few.

SPAS AND THERMES
For relaxation and a bit of self-indulgence, there are many fabulous Spas in and around the towns and villages all within easy access, and many newly refurbished — Le Thermes de CauteretsLe Jardin des Bains and Les Thermes de Luz.

Further objective reading about Les Rochers and the area can be found in our entries in both the Lonely Planet and the Rough Guides.

PLANES AND TRAINS
Pau is a 45 minute drive away, with Biarritz being 90, Toulouse 120, Carcassonne 180 and Lourdes is 15 to 30 minutes from the hotel.

AUTOROUTE A64
Take exit number 12 and follow the signs for Lourdes, Argeles-Gazost and then Saint-Savin (35 minutes).
